Week 4 Back In The Groove

My recovery from injury has gone well and this week is all about steadying the ship.

After Storm Goretti had done its worst to Cornwall and many thousands of the home in that beautiful county were left devastated with trees down, roads closed and lost power, the week ahead saw a new storm, Storm Ingrid start to brew in the Atlantic. This one was bigger and heading for the South Devon Coast, threatening huge tides, high winds, heavy rain and snow up north. Not nice.

Monday: Quiet day today. The calm before the storm. Literally. Played some golf with the Tetley Boys, my rollup, an had a massage from John Moore.

Tuesday: An early taste of what was to come weather wise with overnight gale force winds and heavy rain continuing into the whole day. I took to path of literally less resistance and went to the gym. Weights and the treadmill for me. The difference in readings from the treadmill and the Forerunner265 watch was considerable with the former showing 8.5k and the later 7.7k. Odd.

Wednesday: Awful weather yet again. Competitions cancelled at Thurlestone Golf Club. Off to the gym for leg work. Try not to overdo it and cause injury. A good session in the end.

Light relief in the evening started with a Music Team meeting and then a full rehearsal of the Kingsmen in preparation for the Saltash contest on the 29th January.

Thursday: Golf was on! A few hours break in the weather from 10am until 1pm saw us all rush out and enjoy our beautiful course.

The rest of the day was a washout. Feet up and a cuppa.

Friday: The wind was starting to increase significantly and my 7.5k "easy" run was looking like being a "tough" run, "excruciating" even. I wasn't wrong. The wing was ferocious and literally took my breath away. Twice I hypervented and had to stop. Set out too fast, this is becoming a real issue for me now, and got caught out. Twice. at 1k and 1.5k. After that I steadied my pace and ran the last 5k really well given the conditions.

Storm Ingrid hit. Massive damage. Especially to the coastal resorts of Tor X, Dawlish, Teignmouth (lost a chunk of its Victorian Pier) and pretty much everywhere else along the south coast.

Saturday: We were unaware of the overnight carnage caused by the storm and decided to go to Stokely Farm for one of their superb lunches. It was 3 hours after high tide so we though a walk down to the seafront at Tor X to catch the vibrant surf.

Nothing prepared us for what we saw.

Sea defences smashed. Houses ripped apart. Roofs torn off. Concrete slabs from patios tossed around like Lego bricks. Windows blown out. The A379 closed in both directions. The pub badly hit. A friend's house with a whole the size of a car in the front wall.

Workmen and owners were already hands on to shore up their properties. Plywood, water pumps, shutters, anything to try and keep the weather at bay.

So very sad. However, the resilience and fortitude of the owners and residents was truly inspirational.

Sunday: My longest run yet. 11k. Storm Ingrid had passed and the day was relatively calm if overcast.

Despite my disturbed sleep, we've some visitors in the attic!, it was a very good run. 1 hour 25 mins for 11k. No breathing issues and 85m of elevation climbed.

A quick lunch and then out for some golf. Well you've got to make the most of a dry spell. Although Thurlestone Golf Course is probably the best draining course in Devon, still on main greens and tees, there is a trolley ban, so carry only.

A really full on day and glad to see the back of Ingrid.
