Week 2 An early lesson

I have realised early that you have to listen to your body and pain is a good way of making you listen. My eagerness to get running after the Christmas break is being thwarted by a niggling hamstring injury.

Monday: A few holes of golf and a trip to John Moore to help ease the tightness that seems to be gripping my body. Golf was a little disappointing despite enjoying the glorious views at Thurlestone and only added to the pain in my leg.

Some well targeted muscle manipulation and training in stretching exercises delivered by John Moore eased the situation and I felt ready for my easy run on Tuesday.

Tuesday: I extended my pre run warm up routine with much more dynamic work, stretching for pretty much every inch of my frame and I was ready to go!

Literally the first step pulled me up in my tracks. Argh! I decided it wasn't going to get the better of me and pushed on with my run. 6k of thudding pain and the mind condition known as Maranoia, a paranoid fear of injury or anything else that could get in the way of being at the start line, was beginning to creep in to my psyche. Keep going. It's only pain.

Wednesday:  Body strength and rest day but it turned out to be a pretty busy one. An hour in the gym, nothing to heavyweight and steered clear of leg exercises followed by brunch with a friend. Protein, eggs and more eggs. I've lost 4kilos since November and have cut out sugar (cakes and chocolate), crisps, biscuits, even my favourite hot cross buns have gone. Replaced by eggs, fish, chicken, and Chai seeds. Who'd gave thought!?

After spending the afternoon clearing old Christmas trees and garden waste up the the skip it was a light dinner and off to weekly Kingsmen rehearsals. We've planned a photoshoot of everyone to promote PCUK and the Marathon. What a great looking bunch of chaps!

The support I've received has been fantastic and I think I'm gonna need all the encouragement that I can get.

Thursday: A rest day. Off to see our Mothers in the next few days, which means about a 500 mile round trip via Cheltenham and Redhill so running is going to be difficult to schedule especially as the weather is still naff and being stuck in a car for hours on end won't aid the recovery of my leg.

How do people with full time jobs find the time. Amazing!

Whatever I do I have to get my long run in this week as I skipped it last week. This time I'm planning to run in the hills surrounding Cheltenham.

Thursday: Rest day. Well actually a forced, weather imposed, rest day. Blogs and JustGiving page set up and a journey up to Cheltenham.

Friday: Off to see Mum. Cheltenham to Redhill, 250 miles round trip. Back by 2pm and out running. 8k easy run. That's a laugh. Since when was an 8k run easy!?

With both legs screaming at me I managed to complete the task. My sister in law, Sarah had mapped a route from Charlton Kings to Cheltenham Station and back. Getting to the station was fine but took a wrong turning that extended my return leg to 5.5k. But got to see bits of Cheltenham I hadn't previously seen. Please with my tempo and that my hamstrings held up.

Sunday: 9k long run, with faster intervals. I felt pretty good for this one and spent a long time warming up and hydrating. I decided to try out taking on water whilst still running. Ha. I've a long way to go with this and spilt more over my vest than into my mouth.

The breathing technique I'm using is becoming almost meditative, 3 seconds in and 4 seconds out, both steady through the nose. No racing heart, hyperventilating, panic attacks. Phew.

If you'd like to support my efforts please go to my JustGiving page and contribute whatever you can towards this vital charity.
