Week 5 - The Eye Of The Storm

Image
The aftermath of Storm Ingrid has left havoc and carnage along the coast of South Devon. The beachside village or Tor X in particular was very badly hit and the A379 Slapton Line was closed in both directions.  Sea defences were destroyed and strewn around like lego bricks, roofs had their slates shredded and tossed like Frisbees and several houses had holes in their from elevations that you could drive a family car through. I've never visited a war zone, but I can only imagine that it's pretty similar to what I saw at Tor X on Sunday. So sad for the residents, some of whom are friends. A major clear up operation is underway but another storm, Storm Chandra is due to hit today.  Monday:  Quiet day today. Even managed to get some shopping done. It's our Grandson Thomas's 9th birthday in February and he loves all things Nike. A cool black performance hoody did the trick. Might get one for myself. Hmm,  My weekly physio session with John Moore helped my recovery from Su...

Week 4 Back In The Groove

Image
My recovery from injury has gone well and this week is all about steadying the ship.  After Storm Goretti had done its worst to Cornwall and many thousands of the home in that beautiful county were left devastated with trees down, roads closed and lost power, the week ahead saw a new storm, Storm Ingrid start to brew in the Atlantic. This one was bigger and heading for the South Devon Coast, threatening huge tides, high winds, heavy rain and snow up north. Not nice.  Monday:  Quiet day today. The calm before the storm. Literally. Played some golf with the Tetley Boys, my rollup, an had a massage from John Moore.   Tuesday: An early taste of what was to come weather wise with overnight gale force winds and heavy rain continuing into the whole day. I took to path of literally less resistance and went to the gym. Weights and the treadmill for me. The difference in readings from the treadmill and the Forerunner265 watch was considerable with the former showing 8.5k...

Week 3 Injury Free

Image
After completing my programme last week and getting through it in tact, a round of golf on Monday was a welcome relief.  Monday: Although the Thurlestone Golf Course was as stunning and beautiful as always, my golf was far from pretty and my team were trounced by the other groups in the Tetley's Rollup. No such things as a bad round at TGC because the views are so uplifting.  John Moore delivered my normal Monday afternoon stretch, manipulate and grind treatment to get my body ready for the challenges of the coming week. Tuesday:  Devon's weather at it's worst! Very high winds and heavy rain had pummelled our lovely region over night and had continued into the day. No run for me along Bowcombe lane. The Quay Leisure Centre gym and its running treadmills were beckoning.  7k variable run including shorter, 400m, higher pace, hmmm, repeats were a new feature to extend my running repertoire. The main problem was the inconsistencies between my Garmin Forerunner smart wat...

Week 2 An early lesson

Image
I have realised early that you have to listen to your body and pain is a good way of making you listen. My eagerness to get running after the Christmas break is being thwarted by a niggling hamstring injury.  Monday: A few holes of golf and a trip to John Moore to help ease the tightness that seems to be gripping my body. Golf was a little disappointing despite enjoying the glorious views at Thurlestone and only added to the pain in my leg.  Some well targeted muscle manipulation and training in stretching exercises delivered by John Moore eased the situation and I felt ready for my easy run on Tuesday. Tuesday: I extended my pre run warm up routine with much more dynamic work, stretching for pretty much every inch of my frame and I was ready to go! Literally the first step pulled me up in my tracks. Argh! I decided it wasn't going to get the better of me and pushed on with my run. 6k of thudding pain and the mind condition known as Maranoia, a paranoid fear of injury or any...

Week 1 Slowly Does It

Image
I have a tiny weeny confession to make! I started training in November last year hoping that I could achieve a 10K run before Christmas Day. If I couldn't get to this milestone, I knew it would be highly unlikely that I would be able to take on a Marathon by 26th April. I'm pleased to say I just about achieved this and on 24th December, yes Christmas Eve, I ran my first 10K in 71 minutes. The time doesn't matter, as everyone tells me. What mattered to me was the fact that I didn't have to stop two or three times to get my breath.  You see what the Youtube vids and Instagram posts don't tell you before you start is that if you don't know how to breathe properly you collapse, even more so at my age.  I thought I was having either heart or panic attacks Or Both! I've since discovered I was Hyperventilating and gulping in way to much oxygen and exhaling too much CO2 then gulping too much oxygen again. Turns out you need to retain a certain amount of CO2 to cause...
